Oenorama is Greece’s most important wine event, organized yearly. It is a wine exhibition featuring wine producers from all over Greece, who are there in person to present their wines, so one gets to meet them up close. In addition to Greek wines Oenorama hosts wines from other parts of the world, mainly through their Greek importers. Visitors are both trade and consumers.
Oenorama is organized by Vinetum, a wine communication company that specializes in event management, content creation and consultancy. Other events organized by Vinetum include Fine Red Wines, Afros & Nectar (Sparkling & Sweet Wines), Drink Pink (Rosé Wines) Greek Spirits and the Athens Craft Beer Festival. Vinetum also organize the Athena International Olive Oil Competition, now in its 8th year.
Visiting an exhibition like Oenorama is a great experience even if you are not a wine connoisseur.
At reception you will receive your tasting glass with the show’s logo, a notebook and a pen and a wrist band that allows multiple entries during the session you have chosen to attend.
Fully equipped, you can wander from stand to stand tasting as many wines as you like, exchanging with producers and other wine lovers.
You will find information on the wines and their growers with your smartphone by scanning each exhibitor’s QR code at their stand or here.
There are close to 300 Greek and foreign wineries at Oenorama.
Most have their own stand but importers and distributors tend to present many wines at their stands; in any case it is wise to ask an exhibitor how many wines they are presenting and agree with them beforehand on the number of wines you will taste.
You can taste any wine that piques your curiosity and discuss it with the producer, the oenologist or person in charge of the stand.
There is no limit to the number of wines you can taste but we strongly urge you to NOT swallow the wines, but rather... spit them out in the special spittoons, as the professionals do.
It is a widespread and acceptable practice in the wine world, indeed this is something that will win you many points with all winemakers!
This way you can enjoy as many wines as you like without impairing your judgment and of course without suffering unwanted consequences at the end of your visit.
It is impossible to taste all of the wines presented at Oenorama. Your visit will be more interesting if you plan ahead; you can group the wines you plan to taste according to various criteria which make comparisons possible and interesting. For example, you can taste all the wines of a certain grape variety one after the other. Alternatively, you can focus on a region, a specific vintage or even a color (e.g. rosé wines). We encourage you to use our website’s dynamic search engine, here, to better prepare your visit.
Beyond the tasting knowledge that anyone visiting a wine exhibition may or may not have, there are certain rules of good behavior that are good to know and apply. The large number of visitors requires that we all respect the exhibitor-winemaker as well as the guest next to us, mainly by allowing access to the winemakers’ stand and not monopolizing the… spittoon!
